Plan Changes and Billing Transitions
What happens to redirects, SDK calls, analytics, and grace periods when you cancel, downgrade, miss a payment, pass a limit, or end the domain trial.
Redirects on the default domains keep working through every plan change except account deletion. What changes is custom-domain serving, analytics reads, and what you can create. Existing links, apps, and members are never removed because of a downgrade. This page is the full table.
"SDK" below means the calls an installed app makes to resolve a link and to match an install. "Dark" means a custom domain has stopped serving: its links answer like a link that does not exist.
The table
| Situation | Redirects | SDK resolve and attribution | Analytics | Dashboard edits | Grace period |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cancel a paid plan | Keep working | Keep working under the Free limits | Clicks recorded before the change are kept for your old plan's retention window. A Free organization reads the last 30 days. | Allowed. Creating beyond the Free limits is refused. | Paid access runs to the end of the billing period. Custom domains above the Free limit get a grace period of up to 30 days after the plan changes. |
| Downgrade to a lower paid plan | Keep working | Keep working | Clicks recorded before the change are kept for the old retention window. | Allowed. Creating beyond the new limits is refused. | Custom domains above the new limit get a grace period of up to 30 days. The change is immediate, with the price difference refunded to the card. |
| Refund and end now | Default domains keep working. Custom domains go dark at once. | Default domains keep working. Links on a dark custom domain are not found. | The extra retention is not kept. The Free window applies, and older clicks are removed by the nightly retention sweep. | Allowed. Creating beyond the Free limits is refused. | None |
| Failed payment | Keep working | Keep working | Unchanged | Allowed | The account is marked past due and the dashboard shows a banner. Nothing else changes until the subscription is cancelled. |
| Free trial custom domain reaches 3 months | Links on that domain go dark. Other domains are unaffected. | Links on that domain are not found. | The trial domain's click history is removed every 30 days during the trial. | Allowed. Upgrading turns the domain back on. | None. The domain is released 30 days after it goes dark. |
| Custom domains over the plan limit | The oldest domains within the limit keep serving. The others serve through the grace period, then go dark. | Same as redirects | Unchanged | Allowed. Adding a domain above the limit is refused. | A grace period of up to 30 days, then 30 more days dark before the domain is released |
| Links, apps, or members over the plan limit | Keep working | Keep working | Unchanged | Existing items stay and stay editable. Creating or inviting more is refused until you are under the limit. | None. Nothing is removed. |
| Over the monthly click limit | Always keep working, on every plan | Keep working | Free: figures freeze at the moment the limit was reached, and clicks are still recorded. Paid: never frozen. | Allowed | None. Free analytics go live again at the next billing period or on upgrade. |
| Delete the account or organization | Stop | Fail: the keys are deleted | Removed and cannot be recovered | Not applicable | None |
Details
Cancel
Cancelling schedules the end of the subscription at the end of the billing period you paid for. You keep your paid plan until then, and no refund is issued. When the period ends, the organization moves to the Free plan. Resuming the subscription before the period ends undoes the cancellation. See Data portability for what cancelling does not do.
Downgrade to a lower paid plan
The plan changes immediately. We refund the prorated difference to your card when it is at least 50 cents. Limits are checked when you create something, not when you downgrade. If you have more links, apps, or members than the new plan allows, they all stay.
Refund and end now
You can ask for the unused part of the current period back and end paid access at once. The organization moves to the Free plan immediately. Because the refund replaces the grace we would otherwise give, the longer retention window and the custom-domain grace period do not apply. Custom domains go dark immediately.
Failed payment
When a payment fails, we mark the account past due and show a banner in the dashboard. The plan, the limits, and serving do not change at that moment. If the subscription is later cancelled by the payment processor, the cancel row applies.
Free trial custom domain
A Free organization can run one custom domain for 3 months, starting when the domain goes live. During the trial, that domain's click history resets every 30 days. When the 3 months end, the domain goes dark. A dark domain is warned about 23 days after it goes dark and released at 30 days, which frees the name. Upgrading to a paid plan turns a domain back on, as long as it has not yet been released. See Custom domains.
Custom domains over the limit
When a plan change leaves you with more custom domains than the plan allows, the oldest domains within the limit stay active. Each domain beyond the limit enters a grace period of up to 30 days and keeps serving. When the period ends, the domain goes dark. A domain that stays dark for 30 days is released, and its owner is warned 7 days before.
A dark domain is not a deleted link. The links stay in your account. Upgrading before release restores the domain.
Over a limit
Plan limits on links, apps, members, and custom domains apply when you create. A downgrade never deletes existing items.
Over the click limit
Redirects are never blocked because of a click limit, on any plan. On the Free plan, analytics freeze at the moment you reach 10,000 clicks in the billing period, and clicks keep being recorded. Paid plans are not frozen. We warn you at 50, 80, and 90 percent. See Link analytics.
Delete
Deleting an organization cancels its subscription, removes its data, and stops its links. It does not issue a refund and it cannot be undone. Export first. See Data portability.
